Gerry Fell was a Scunthorpe born centre-half who began his footballing career with Elsecar in 1914 and, after the First World War, he joined Second Division club Barnsley in April 1920, making his Football League debut against Blackpool the same month. He was a regular in the Barnsley first eleven from the following August, but after scoring three goals in 63 appearances for The Tykes, he was transferred to Bradford Park Avenue in March 1922, although he couldn’t help save them from relegation at the end of the season.

Fell spent six years with The Avenue, helping them finish Third Division (North) runners up in 1922-23 and again in 1925-26, a season in which, like 1924-25, he was an ever present for Bradford. Fell lost his place in March 1927, as Bradford put in another strong showing, finishing third, and the following season he played only once as they eventually won the Third Division (North) Championship. He was also part of Avenue’s FA Cup giant killing team that beat First Division Everton in a first round replay, winning 1-0 at Park Avenue in January 1923.

After having scored seven goals in 197 appearances for Bradford, Fell moved to Chesterfield in May 1928 and he was an ever present for The Spireites scoring four goals in 45 appearances during season 1928-29 before moving on again, this time to non-league Gainsborough Trinity in the 1929 close season.

He subsequently played for Mexborough Athletic in 1933 and Newark Town in 1934 before his eventual retirement.

NB: Fell was the grandfather of Gerald Charles ‘Gerry’ Fell (b. 1/3/1951) a professional footballer 1974-1986, most notably with Brighton & Hove Albion, Southend United and Torquay United. He was also grandfather of  Mark Fell (b. 17/11/60) a cricketer with Nottinghamshire County Cricket team 1981-1985.
